Understanding Poker - Seven Card Stud

Seven card studs is a popular poker variant. This game was at one time the most popular variant in homes across the United States until the popularity of Texas Hold 'Em increased so immensely.

This is a game of two to eight players, with seven cards and follows the general rules of game play for poker with the same basic hand values. Betting is begun clockwise and the person who has the highest poker hand showing starts.

When betting is over, the game begins two cards are then dealt face down to each person and 1 card face up. Then the players will then bet on the cards they currently have or fold depending on their own choice.

The dealer then deals another card up to each player. Then, yet another round of betting takes place. The dealer deals two more up cards with a round of betting between each. At this point some people have likely already to have folded by now, some could be bluffing is it you? Then the final card is dealt face down to each player. You have a final round of betting and then your good old showdown to determine the winner of the hand.

There are several variations that over the year's players have put into the game. There are some who play it straight meaning no wilds, no extra buy cards. Then there are some who really like to spice up there game and add more fun to it. They'll add an extra buy card which is, if a player is dealt a face up 4 they can for a pre-determined amount of chips buy an extra card. The dealer always has the choice on extra buy cards and any rules for that matter. Such as wild cards, many like to play baseball which would be a 3 and 9 are wild cards. I've set in games where they'll call a one-eyed jack wild, or king with a sword.

No matter how you choose to play it's always a fun game to play on a night with your friends.
